Gai Brodtmann MP appointed Patron of Olympia Judo Club

Member for Canberra, Gai Brodtmann MP, has accepted an appointment as Patron of Olympia Judo Club, operating in Wanniassa in Tuggeranong. Judo is an Olympic defensive sport suitable for girls and boys, and men and women of all ages for recreational, self-defence and competition enjoyment.

In accepting the appointment, Gai Brodtmann said she is delighted to support local sport in Tuggeranong particularly clubs that embrace diverse participation and high standards of fun, expertise and care.

“I’m delighted to be appointed Patron of the Olympia Judo Club,” said Ms Brodtmann. “Judo is a terrific sport that anybody can get enjoy, and it’s great to have a club such as Stephanos’ helping to encourage southsiders to get involved.”

“We are very pleased and proud to have Gai Brodtmann MP as our Patron and supporting our club in Tuggeranong,” said Stephanos Georgiadis, founder of Olympia Judo Club.

Olympia was established in 2012 by Sensei Stephanos Georgiadis, a former Australian and Greek National champion and representative of both countries at world level competitions. He is Yon (4th) Dan black belt, accredited coach with the International Judo Federation, registered referee and holds tertiary qualifications in teaching and physical education.

Olympia’s senior instructor is Professor Fermin Harnandez Sollet a Master of Judo with over 50 years’ experience. Fermin is Roku (6th) Dan black belt and has coached at Olympic level when leading the Mali National judo team at the Sydney Olympics. His team collectively won 40 International medals including two World Championships. Olympia’s progress is one of Canberra’s best kept sporting secrets!

Training times (media welcome):

  • Mondays: 5:30 to 6:30pm at Wanniassa
  • Wednesday: 5:30 to 6:30pm and 6:30 to 8pm at Gilmore
  • Friday: 5:30 to 6:30pm at Wanniassa (or in Gilmore)
