The English Royal Navy Judo Association Team (ERNJAT) delegation visited Australia in mid-January to participate in training and developing camps, as part of their yearly training program. Lieutenant Stephen Watson, the head of the ERNJAT, requested Olympia judo club’s coaches to offer them training during their visit to Canberra.

In response to their request, coach Stephanos Georgiadis offered three training sessions at the AIS facilities for the ERNJAT and selected athletes from the Canberra region.

Coach or Sensei Stephanos Georgiadis is a former Greek and Australian mid heavyweight judo champion.

The event took place at the AIS combat center facilities.

At the opening session, the CEO of the judo federation welcomed the group in the presence of the Olympia Patron and local member Gai Brodtmann’s representative, the AIS’s Combat Center Special Lead Clare Humberstone and a number of visitors.

Coach Stephanos said: “Our club, being one of the leading judo clubs in Canberra, now receives international interest and requests for participation which emphasises the importance on delivering high standard training programs and quality developing opportunities to all of our athletes at all levels.”

“On behalf of the Olympia Judo Club I would like to thank the Judo Federation of Australia for their support to this event and the AIS combat center for their accommodation.”

“It was a great opportunity for our local and national judo members to work alongside judo athletes from England and experience our specially designed training programs.”

“The Feedback we have received indicates that once again, we have exceeded expectations. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity delivering these sessions to all of the participants and enabled myself to support ERNJAT developing/ training program.”

“Olympia’s progress continues as one of Canberra’s best kept sporting secrets! New members are always welcome’ Stephanos concluded.”

Gai Brodtmann MP, Patron of Olympia Judo Club commented on this event in her own release:

“As patron of the Olympia Judo Club, I am delighted to welcome the delegation of the English Royal Navy Judo Association Team to the Combat Centre at the Australian Institute of Sport today.”

“Olympia Judo Club was established in 2012 by Sensei Stephan’s Georgiadis to promote the sport to the nation’s capital. Since then, the club has become known for its encouragement of men and women of all ages in the sport, whether they are interested in competition, self-defence or simply recreational fun.”

“I hope this visit supports this goal and I have no doubt your delegation will be met with the same warmth and sense of participation that Olympia Judo Club has brought to Canberra.”

“Personally and on their behalf, I wish to welcome the English Royal Navy Judo Association Team to our club and to our capital.”
